The hospital bag basics, for the birth, for you, for baby…

There’s a lot of advice available; however, these are the hospital bag essentials we’ve tried, loved, been recommended or simply, really, really rate.
Produced in collaboration.
THE BASICS
Realistically, you’ll need a hospital bag for yourself, as well as a separate bag for the baby. A mini case or holdall is ideal. Personally, we love the Tiba & Marl Raf holdall for the baby, based on our own experience. Moreover, it’s consistently been rated the best hospital bag by pretty much everyone.
Norland Nanny and Family Consultant Prudence Beeby offered us her top packing tips “Be prepared for birth in good timing, start having the basics of your hospital bag ready by 35 weeks, this gives you time to pack properly without being rushed. I also recommend packing yours & baby’s bag with your birthing partner. Divide your belongings into different pouches which are labelled for ease and convenience.”
You don’t want to overpack, as it’ll hopefully be a short stay; therefore, it’s best to just pack the essentials. Non-negotiables include breast pads, maternity pads, and a facial spritz (you’ll definitely be grateful for this during and after labour). Additionally, The Expert Midwife Spritz for Bits is a total gamechanger after a vaginal birth—if you know, you know. Furthermore, Medela’s Nipple Balm offers welcome relief and is 100% safe for baby, while the Breast Massage Oil is truly a treat during those first few post-birth days.
FOR MUM
We tried disposable knickers, and honestly, it felt wrong. As a result, we’re now all for a multipack of massive, comfy, and inexpensive knickers that you can still throw away if needed. What’s even better is that they cost around the same. Much more civilized, in our opinion.
We’ve found that large, baggy t-shirts are just as good as anything to wear during labour. Additionally, you’ll probably want a lightweight robe and some flip-flops to wear as well. Also, don’t forget socks, as your feet can get weirdly cold during labour. And a water bottle is a must, along with snacks to keep your energy up.
Post-birth a pair of loose fit, button front pyjamas are just perfect. A comfortable, lovely maternity bra like this one from beautiful maternity movement brand Jorgen House is essential. And some more treat-style footwear. Remember a few essentials to make you feel normal, the every&one Multi-Tasking Cream is a godsend. Use it to wash, cleanse, moisturise, shave and prime. On face and body. It’s fast becoming a cult beauty buy.
FOR BABY
So, baby doesn’t actually need much those first few days… just you. And hospitals have everything you might need if you need them. Breast pumps, baby milk etc…
You do need nappies. We’re obsessed with Peachies. I mean the branding alone is just so good but they’re like an upgraded nappy – no nasty chemicals, a dream for sensitive baby skin and kinder to the planet. You’ll also need wipes. Muslins are handy for everything – from wiping up to changing baby on.
Personally, we love newborn babies in the simplest, softest of white bodysuits and sleepsuits. Plus, a newborn hat for those first few days. You might want a few more statement additions for the big hospital exit pics. A super soft cardigan and booties are perfect.
You might want to take a soft comforter, this one from The Puppet Company has the added charm of doubling up as a cute finger puppet. And take our advice and start them on Ewan the Sheep early. He’s multi award winning as a sleep aid mimicking the comfort of the womb through white noise and a soft glow. He has an inbuilt cry-detector which automatically activates when baby stirs. Genius. He’s the reason we had any sleep at all during those first few months.
