I asked what you were looking to shop for your own kids now over on Instagram last week and a LOT of responses were along the lines of ‘basics’. Baby & kids everyday essentials. Likely the most worn yet unappreciated members of a wardrobe. Underwear, socks, tights, leggings and tops that are easy, comfortable, can be layered, suitable for play, forest school, classes and nursery. But still look nice. Not necessarily cheap. But not too expensive either – so in this edit I’ve taken price into account.
These are my top affordable picks for all ages. From baby and toddler to tweens. A lot is high street (Arket, H&M and John Lewis’ ANDAY collection are great one stop shops and Lindex, Next and Zara are good too), there’s a bit of supermarket (Tu is the best) but there are also some great pieces from independent brands which are not always much more than the bigger retailers in terms of price. I love Turtledove London. And new brand KLOFF‘s aim is to offer exactly this – an alternative to the big brands with their elevated range of kid’s basics for everyday wear at a reasonable price. Kidly’s own label is also brilliant & stylish + they often do offers.
If you do want to spend a little more, I love MamaOwl for high quality, considered pieces from beautiful, thoughtful brands in the most perfect colour palettes. Wheat is a recent addition to my favourites list, I’ve long been impressed by the quality and fit of Gray Label and Organic Zoo and Mori are my go-to’s for baby and toddler. Oh, and The Simple Folk has the dreamiest aesthetic.
I also must mention shopping preloved for this purpose. It’s worth checking Vinted for brands you love. Mini Rodini and Bobo Choses for example are great everyday play clothes but you, understandably, might not want kids to wear them for nursery. But purchased second hand, still in good condition but for a lot less you’ll probably be less precious. I also love Roo & Wren Preloved who offer a carefully curated selection of baby & kids clothing twice a month – it’s mostly high street – but the best bits of the high street + a bit of Oshkosh and cool trainers.
